Sub-Saharan Africa will see its population grow by 2 billion people in the coming decades. Yet this is a region that continues to suffer from energy and food insecurity. Farmers struggle to afford imported, natural gas derived fertilisers which cost up to 400% more than in European markets, resulting in low agricultural yields. Over two thirds of the region’s population lacks access to electricity, whilst those that do pay 2 to 5 times as much as the global average.
Westgass is developing green ammonia and green hydrogen facilities with regional partners using 100% renewable energy. We are investing in supply chains to provide farmers locally produced fertilisers, and rural communities affordable clean energy.
